What is Collyweston Roofing?

Collyweston slates are laid in diminishing courses. This means that the slates get smaller with each course, with the smallest slates at the ridge line and the largest at eaves level. The stone slates are laid using the double lap slating method.

This means that the slates should overlap the slate in the course next but one below by two or three inches (head lap) and each slate should also overlap the slate in the course below laterally by about half of its width.

Collyweston Slating Process

  • Strip the roofing
Take all the slates off and the battons off
  • Apply Felt
Place felt on exposed structure and battons to keep it watertight
  • Dress
Taking all the old mortar off each slate and creating 3 straight sides
  • Drill
Create a hole to attach the slate to the battons
  • Part
Putting slates into different size groups to match up when securing
  • Do a rod
Which measures the depth of the roof
  • apply battons
These are the structural wooden strip supports that hold the slates to the roof
  • attach the slate
Lay mortar bed, then attach a slate, then rake it back to create a lip allowing water to drain properly

It’s refreshing to meet a craftsman like Jack Wakefield. Not only is he highly experienced, he is extremely hard working and completely honest. He’s also the most competitive Collyweston roofer in the area by a big margin.

We engaged Jack in mid June in to strip and replace a large section of our Collyweston roof which was leaking and in a terrible state of repair. He has done a fantastic job, and quite honestly has been a pleasure to have with us over the past couple of months. As well as being on time and on budget (with no hidden extras) we always had the feeling that Jack had our best interests at heart. That’s a rare quality, particularly in the dark art of Collyweston roofing.

We wish Jack every success building his business, and cannot recommend him highly enough.

We were fortunate to secure your services to carry out the complete replacement of our Grade 2 listed Collyweston slate roof. The work was planned and carried out efficiently and skilfully with minimum disturbance in spite of challenging weather conditions that varied between 30 degree temperatures, torrential rain and high winds. As clients with professional design and craft skills we have appreciated your attention to detail, craftsmanship and formidable work ethic. Thank you for sensitively restoring our roof, it will surely stand the test of time and remain as a fine example of your work.
